The Tween Years - It's up to us!
Ahhhh, the "tween" years!
That time where your daughter is no longer a "little kid" but not yet a teenager either. So much is happening mentally, emotionally and physically. Many things are changing for these young ladies. Do you remember it? I do.
As a "tween" you start to worry about everything.
At this age they may be starting a new school. Where they have been the "Big Kids" in elementary school they are now the "little kids" again in middle school. They start to have more responsibility, more homework, changing classes, "Will I get lost in the hallways?", meeting new people, "Will I make friends?", "Will I fit in?". Their parents and teachers drive them batty. They are learning little life lessons and some of them are just not easy! Maybe there is acne and braces and glasses. Their bodies are changing, and it all happens pretty quickly.
The changes that are happening are not all on the outside but on the inside too, the way they think, the way they view things, and see the people around them. They start to make their own decisions on how to dress, their style, who they become new friends with and how they choose spend their free time.
It is still up to us, as parents, to guide them, help them make good and healthy choices and decisions, and to teach them what real beauty is.
Becoming yourself is really hard and confusing, and it is a process.
It's often not cool to put yourself "out there".
~ Emma Watson
A few months ago I had a woman call me to make an appointment to have professional portraits made of her daughter. She told me that her daughter was a middle school student at "that" age. She went on to explained to me that the reason she wanted to do this for her daughter was because of the women's OWN insecurities and lack of confidence that began at this age. She felt is was important to give her daughter this gift to show her that she is Beautiful! We spoke for quite a while before scheduling the appointment.
What an amazing gift that this woman has to understand where her own feelings as an adult stem from and to make a conscious effort to keep it from happening to her own daughter! I thought, what a great idea and it made perfect sense.
The day of the session she had her (age appropriate) hair and make up done with our partner Salon K.
She brought some fun clothes from her own closet that best represented her and she felt great in and we mixed it up with some of the items we keep here at the studio too! This session was more about the experience and how she felt than a simple sit and smile at the camera on school picture day. Not only did she have a special day with mom but she had a fun time being pampered at the salon, and she enjoyed a photoshoot that ended with beautiful portraits to have as a reminder of the day... and how beautiful she really is - inside and out!
You're never fully dressed without a smile!
That day, this young girl, smiled and laughed. She learned that she is already a beautiful person but, by putting clothes on that make you feel great, running a brush through your hair and adding lip gloss you feel even better! She learned to take pride in herself. And this day she SHINED.
Kudos to this mom for taking the time to remind her daughter in such a fantastic way that she is already beautiful and here is to hoping she always feels that way!
It is up to us to show our girls true beauty, to show them how to feel great in the body they are in, and to build their confidence now so that they have great self esteem later!

Do you Exist in Portraits?
I have spoken to many, many women about this very subject. I will ask "When was the last time YOU had a portrait taken?" or "When was the last time you were in a picture?" (cell phone pictures do not count since chances are very good you will never print those!) It is very common for the response to be when I was a senior in high school or my wedding day. My next question is "What are you waiting for?" Inevitably the response is "I need to lose 20 pounds", "I'm busy with the kids", or "I don't have time". You might be thinking the same thing as your answer.
Meet Melissa.
Melissa is a mom of four busy girls that she homeschools. I met Melissa several years ago when she came to me for her pregnancy and baby portraits. I have had the pleasure of watching her family grow and change over the years. About 3 years ago her husband mentioned to me at the end of one of their family sessions that he would love to have me do a photoshoot with Melissa, Just her. I was thrilled! But, life happens, and it didn't happen. Finally, after offering Modern Beauty sessions for the past couple years, we recently made her an appointment for her session.
Melissa was excited but also nervous. It is not something she had ever done before and as many moms do, she always puts the children first. And, in chatting with her in her consultation she mentioned that this was the first time that she had been out without one of the girls for more than an hour, in 10 years! She said "With homeschooling and children's activities and general care of the family there is no wiggle room for a quick trip to the gym, or even a haircut once in awhile. Especially with a husband who is often on call and works late to support our family of 6. While giving my children the best, It is wonderful to get an occasional break (even an alone trip to the grocery store) and I always return refreshed."
She also mentioned that she had never had her hair and makeup professionally done - not even for her own wedding! This was a serious treat for her! Like so many moms Melissa mentioned that
"I am rarely in a photograph since I'm usually the one taking the photos.
We dont usually have wiggle room to afford such a thing, so this was a special treat!"
I was even more excited now! Melissa was in for a treat complete with pampering.
When Melissa came in she brought several pieces of clothing with her so we had options, some she had bought long ago and sat in her closet-never worn. Others, she let the girls use for dress up and some were things that she nursed her babies in that were just comfortable! Not only did we have lots to work with but some had some sentimental meaning as well!
After chatting a bit and looking through her clothing options we went over to Salon K for the pampering to begin! She was scheduled with Karrie and Bella for Hair and Makeup!
Make up with the amazing Bella
getting her first glimpse of her look!
One last fluff before heading to the studio for her shoot!
I was a glamorous version of myself and definitely a
huge improvement
and something I want to try to replicate if we get out to
parties or events!
The experience at the salon was amazing! I felt so pampered and having photos taken made me

feel special and valued.

Here are a few of Melissa's gorgeous portraits from the day!
"The last time I had a portrait of myself just of myself alone was probably the photos
take of myself at my wedding in 2005.
It is so hard to find time to get something done just for you.
Having quality hair and makeup and professional portrait photographer
take your photograph is creating something that will be a small legacy
of yourself.
It is a portrait time capsule of a mother/sister/wife/daughter."
~ Melissa
So let me ask you....
Is it time for you to have a legacy portrait made of yourself for your family?

We are Back from Atlanta!
We are back!
Lauri, my husband, me and 10,000 of my closest photography friends are home from Imaging USA 2016! What a crazy week!
Anyone that REALLY knows me knows 1) This is only the second time my husband and I have been away without the kids (more than 1 night) since Syd was born - she is 12! 2) That I don't like to fly and the only reason I did fly is because if we drove it would mean 2 more days away! 3) I was determined to go it because I was getting some pretty big awards while I was there! SO - I did it, and Thankfully, I survived! :)
There were so many things that happened I am happy that I went!
1) I received my Imaging Excellence Award. That means that The Imaging Excellence Award recognizes those individuals who have obtained their master's degree in photography and continue to excel in their profession and succeed in PPA's International Print Competition. To be eligible
for this honor, an entrant must hold a master's degree from PPA and have had a
minimum of 13 images accepted into the PPA Loan Collection.
The fact that I received 6 of those Loans this past summer qualified me for that Award! It is really a big deal!
2) While I was there I was also recognized as both a GOLD and DIAMOND Photographer of the year! This means that I entered 2 print cases this year. One in the Photographic Open and one for the Artist category. Diamond is the highest you can get -meaning that all 4 of my entries for my Photographic Open case received LOAN status. The Gold status means 2 out of my 4 entries for my Artist case went Loan. There were only 35 Diamond Photographers Internationally this year and I was one of them!
3) I earned my PPA MASTER ARTIST DEGREE. This is not an easy degree to get. It takes lots of hard work! I was one of only 12 to get it this year out of all the degree recipients. I am #2 in New England to earn it (next to my mentor Ella Carlson - she got hers last year) and the ONLY photographer in NH to have it.
I also got to meet my "Idol" Sue Bryce. She is a HUGE inspiration to me (I was like a 15 year old girl at her first concert!) lol I actually got to talk to her and have my picture taken with her and she signed my book! To say I was on cloud 9 would be an understatement!
Then I visited the Amherst Media Display in the tradeshow! Here I am with the Associate Publisher Kate Neaverth (L) and Associate Editor Barbara Lynch-Johnt (R) and of course I am holding my first book! I am exciting that they are working with me now on my second book!
And of course I got to hang out with friends!
Here are at the closing party at the Georgia Aquarium! It was pretty amazing!
I want to thank Lauri and Bob for taking most of the images that I am in! <3

Welcome to 2016! BIG Announcement #1
Happy New Year!
I am happy to announce BIG changes to Photography by Nylora this year! Changes that I am sure no one saw coming. Not even ME at first!
This new blog is the first of many announcements to come. The last time I had a blog it was for Bellies and babies and we had MANY followers! I am hoping to top those numbers this year with the new Modern Beauty Blog that you are reading now.
2016 is going to be a whole new year for us here at the studio and we are so excited to be growing again! Times they are a changin'! And, as you can imagine, if you don't change with them you will fall behind and be forgotten. That is not what we are about here! For those of you that already know me, I like to stay ahead of the curve, be a leader, not a follower.
When I began offering Bellies and babies back in 2003 it was ground breaking for this area. I was literally the first to offer prenatal (pregnancy) portraits. No one else was offering them! So I took a chance and decided I was going to "specialize" in them. And, I did. I gave up weddings, seniors, families and focused mainly on learning everything I could about posing, lighting, and marketing prenatal portraits. It was good. Real good.
It was a natural progression to also include the newborn session because as we all know after the pregnancy comes the baby! And, who doesn't want gorgeous newborn portraits of the little person that you fall in love with the second you lay eyes on them?
This has been an incredible journey, has taken me a long way and kept my business thriving. I have received many awards for my Bellies and babies work, I have traveled around New England teaching other professional photographers how they too love the bellies and babies business and be successful at it. I have made my mark. I have been truly blessed!
However, it is no longer a "specialized" service any longer. Everyone is offering maternity and newborn photography now. It seems as though anyone with a new camera is instantly a "professional" baby photographer. Pair that with offering a session including all the "edited" images from the shoot for $100 and I cannot, will not compete on price.
It was a hard decision to make, and I spent many nights weighing my options. But I am here to announce my first, and biggest change for 2016.
I will no longer be offering baby, children or "traditional" pregnancy portraits.
Yes, you read that right. Now, there is a small twist to this last statement. Please allow me to explain....
I will still photograph babies and children, BUT, it must be done with mom. :) And, our Belly sessions will only include our artistic Belly Couture Sessions. Why? Well, the biggest reason is (and I can tell you this first hand), is that as a mom WE are the ones that take most of the pictures in the family, and this means we are BEHIND the camera! What will your children have of you if that is always the case for the next 18 years? While this probably won't change the fact that you will still be behind the camera MOST of the time, it will guarantee that you will have, at the very least, a beautiful hand crafted image of you with your child(ren) made with love for generations to come!
Yours in Love and Light,
Nylora :)
ps I will be announcing more changes and exciting news over the coming days! So be sure to check in often!
